A friend gave my husband this container that she had been using as a kitty food bowl. We have been unable to determine its original purpose. Can anyone help?
I did several searches using dimensions, using the GFC tm on the bottom and cast iron "bowl" without handle, and the same thing came up each time..... a bowl or tray for a set of scales -the old style balanced bar type scales. One listing said it was from a Butcher's Scale. That's the best info I could find. Who knows for sure.
I tend to a agree with a scale. There are several listings for GFC trademarked and this seems to be one of a scale maker:

I have not had a chance to dig deeper. If I learn more, I will post back.
This is a guess, but looking @ the markings, I'm thinking it may have been part of a water pump.

There's a contact form here and maybe they would be able to tell you:

It is definitely not for cooking. It would have had a handle.
This is a metal cap from heavy machinery. This is half of what it is, there are other parts that connect to this piece.
This is strange - such a small item that could be part of almost anything.
It appears GFC tm did make scales but other products also.
Cast iron would have to be part of something that had a holder over the bowl or a strap/chain holding it up as there is no way to fasten this par to anything.
