Identifying a Small Black Biting Bug I found a small black bug with a fat abdomen covered in red velvet. It stings. It doesn't look like a velvet ant at all.

Smushed makes it hard to tell.

Google Alabama Red Wasp and see if that is what you have. I am basing this on your description and that you are positive it not a red velvet ant.
