Does anyone know for what this was used? It is about 30 - 40 inches long. The blade part is 17 inches long. There is a sharp edge along only one side.

It looks like an OLD version of a "Drain Spade". Check out this:

A very neat antique tool !!!!!
This is some kind of shovel. Nothing out of the ordinary.
However, I found it unusual because there is a sharp "blade" on only one side. I was not able to see photographs of similar one-sided shovel.
I agree with gggd. This is without a doubt a digger spade.
I think it is from the 19th century. Your spade seems to be narrow.
I noticed that it has a hand-carved handle made from one piece of wood. I found a slightly similar spade with hand-carved handle made from one piece of wood www.farmcollector.com/
Your spade may have been used for digging up drainage tile ogden_images.s3.amazonaws.com/
Thank you for the information. This spade has a "blade" on only one side. The one in the photograph has blades on both sides, as do all the other photographs that I have seen. Have you seen others similar to mine?
As a general rule, sharpening a spade so that a shine appears in an area that extends about 1/4 inch back from the edge of the blade creates a sharp but appropriately durable edge.
