The picture is kinda dark but it sure looks like a really neat desk. You will probably have to ask an antique dealer or get an on-line appraisal.

  • I have never seen a desk like this but it is possible there is something missing that would help identify it.
  • If you have any antique shops in your area you may be able to show them several photos and they might have something similar in one of their books.
  • You can many times get free on-line appraisals and although they may not be accurate in the true value (what an item can bring in a sale) they can many times tell you something about the piece itself.

  • Here is a link that has several sites listed but many of them you will have to "log-on" to be able to seek a free appraisal. As far as I have gone it appears these are legitimate sites and give very good information.

Hopefully you will find out what type of desk you have so please reply or comment and let us know what you find out.

Your desk is a spinet desk. They were made in the early 19th century 19 15 to approx 1940. H.E. Shaw was a furniture company that made them out of Grand rapids Michigan.the original design was from the old stringed instrument a harpsichord when the strings would pop they would turn the harpsichord into a desk because basically it was a mini version of a piano.

It sounded much different but you get my point.

It looks like a spinet desk. they were made from old out of tune pianos I believe in the late 1800's to about 1920.

It looks similar to a desk that I purchased several years ago. I believe it is called a Martha Washington writing desk. With the top folded back it looks a bit different than when it is closed. Mine has 1 small square drawer on each side in front and a thin wide drawer across the bottom front.

Without markings it will be difficult. You could take the picture, and several more close-ups, to an antique dealer.

Hi
It's a SPINET desk. They looked like a table but opened up like a piano (over the keys) to reveal shelves/drawers etc and had a pull out writing surface... Seems like this one is probably from 1920's-1930's.

They were usually made from walnut in that time period.
