Identifying and Caring for a Houseplant?

Identifying and Caring for a Houseplant - leaves dying on variegated leaf plantI received this plant for Mother's Day from my 3 year old daughter, which she has now named "Charlie". I am having trouble figuring out what type of plant this is, and he doesn't seem to be doing very well. I recently gave him fertilizer, and after that he's been slowly declining.

1) What kind of plant is this?
2) How can I save it?

Your plant looks like a rose painted prayer plant. Tips for caring for it can be found at hirts.com/.../ and houseplants-care.blogspot.com/2007/04/prayer-plants-care-tips.html

I never heard them called prayer plants before....neat, I know them as Calathea, but I see from Veronica's link they are the same thing. Cool! Learned something today!!

Yours looks like it may have been sunburned (or fertilizer burned). Cut off the dead stuff and it should come back.

They are kind of finicky, but once you get the right combo of sun and water, they are lovely! The link Veronica gave is very accurate.

Mine always did well and I never fertilized them! So you may want to try just getting the right light and water schedule and see if you even need to feed them more than water.

Keep them away from pets and small children-as they be harmful if consumed.

Then sit back and enjoy the beauty!!

That is definitely a Prayer Plant! I have several. I've found that they like to be spritzed with water on their leaves. Bump it up a size and give it some fresh soil.

It should come right back. I keep mine outside during summer (I live in California) and only bring them in when it gets below 30 degrees in the winters. Best of luck!

I believe it is a prayer plant. It is named so because the leaves close up as hands together in prayer. The name of the 'prayer plant' is 'Maranta'

Hello !
It is a Calathea roseopicta 'Medallion'. It comes from the rain forests of Brazil, and that is why it needs moist first of all and warmth and zenithal light only. That is the atmosphere they have when they live in the shadow at the foot of the tall trees in a steadily extremely moisty atmosphere with the sun light being filtered by the leaves of the big trees and never reaching directly the sides of the plant.

They thrill when you start suffocating and thinking that you will never ever go on holiday in the Amazon forest. Good luck !

Definitely a prayer plant or Calathea I would think.

  • Looks like there are quite a few "look a-likes" but all require the same care and that is what is important.
  • Care instructions from web sites:
  • "Grow prayer plant in low, medium, or bright light. In bright light, it's best to protect the leaves from direct sun by using a sheer curtain or other filter.

  • Prayer plant doesn't need much fertilizer; just once or twice a year (preferably in spring or summer) is enough to keep it healthy. You can certainly fertilize it more frequently if you wish. Use any fertilizer formulated for indoor plants and follow the directions on the packaging."
