I was wondering if anybody recognizes the markings on the bottom of this beautiful large bird figurine. It looks to be ceramic. Part of it is fired and shiny and part of it has a matte finish. It's very realistic looking as far as the branch is concerned. The marking on the bottom BAL?

I dont recognize it. I think it might be some kind of piggy bank because of the hole on the bottom.
No. Theres no slot on top to put money in. The branch is very detailed with flower buds or berries.
This piece has many of the things that are often seen on ceramic class projects (the high gloss finish, primitive look to it, unusual red/orange "beading", and the hole in the bottom).
The markings could be particular to the studio or artist as it looks like a "brand mark"--meaning a metal piece with the letters being pushed into the clay before firing). There are also what look like hand scratchings also--which could indicate firing times, artist, studio etc.
Do you have a ceramic studio in your town? I suggest showing them the piece and asking for them to help ID it.
It is very lovely and knowing the artist may add to the value if you try to sell it.
Birds are very popular in the figurine world and this one has some interesting styling.
