This is very cool! What kind of screws/nails are holding it all together?
Any dovetailing? How are the chair backs affixed to the top/bottom?
These are all things that can help you in the dating process.
From the looks (and this is just an educated guess based on the photo), this was probably a hand made piece done anywhere between 1920s through the 1990s. It has a 50s vibe to it (to me)--I can almost see this being used in a modular home or trailer where space was a premium. But that is only my opinion based on seeing lots of furniture from that era.
My thinking handmade is because:
It has mismatched balusters (a manufactured piece would match)
The chairs and backs legs are plain and do not look uniform. Also with a manufactured piece and it having ornate balusters, the chair would mostly likely be matched in a manufactured piece and since the balusters are mismatched and the chair legs/backs, this also gives it the carpenter made look
The frieze on the back looks out of place--like it was just stuck there--in a manufactured piece it would be inlayed and most likely repeated somewhere else on the piece
The curve on the headboard and footboard and the gingerbread under the shelf do not match. Manufactured pieces are usually methodically symmetrical.
What do you know of the piece?
Can you tell what wood it is? Hard to tell from a photo.
Are you looking to sell or redo it?
If you have a library that you can get access to old copies of wood working magazines you may be able to find the pattern the person used (if indeed they used a pattern). It my have been a creative genius' own invention!!
It is very neat! Thanks for sharing!
It is a headboard and footboard. The footboard has a place for books and two seats to read them.
I guess I shouldve said does anyone know what time. It is from. I bought it because it had the seats am in the footboard but was just curious
