I have a set of Noritake Ardis 5772 china with "U.S. Design Pat. Pend" under the insignia stamp. How is this different than the ones without it?

"Pat. Pend" is a term for someone who has filed already a patent on an item, but it hasn't gone through the end process yet and is waiting to clear and the issued #5772 means if anyone tries to steal the creation, it reveals it is in the process of being a patent pending item and someone will rethink about stealing the idea from that person.
If you are asking to help you value the pieces, you can ask at Replacements.com if they value the Pending Patent pieces higher than the ones without the stamp. I don't see any with the marking for sale online at the moment on any of the sites I frequent. There are a bunch of pieces without the marking sitting unsold on most sites.
Sadly this pattern in general is a very slow seller. Part of the reason is that it can't be microwaved because of the platinum trim and partly because younger folks don't like "china" and older folks are downsizing and there is a glut of it on the market.

I totally agree with this...I am 49 and these pieces were from my Grandmother. Its sad, but I have no need or want for them and my daughter is less interested. It makes sense though that this could be why so much goes unsold today. Thank you!
If replacements.com is willing to buy them and you are comfortable shipping (they have to be wrapped to survive the USPS) that may be the easiest place to sell and collect some money for them.
We sold off a lot of my grandmothers antique china there before the market crashed in 2008 and did quite well.
Post back with updates so we can learn what is working for sales these days! Thanks!!
You could ask the Noritake Collectors Guild here. www.noritakecollectorsguild.info/
When you have a patent, no one can copy your design for a specified number of years. They could get into legal trouble if they tried.
The patent pending is a warning to others that the design will have a patent soon.
The major difference is the patent and if the patent has been approved or is pending. Your piece the patent is pending and it has not yet been completed. The patient has been filed but the process is still pending and not yet been approved.
