Is My 'Chihuahua' Mixed?

Is My 'Chihuahua' Mixed? - speckled black and white dogI got my pup from a woman on Craigslist who said he was a toy Merle Chihuahua. I just took him to the vet and he's 9 weeks and already 3 pounds. I know nothing about Chihuahuas so if someone could give me some insight Id appreciate it!

I think the dog is a mix of chihuahua and Jack Russell terrier.

That is a sweet face! I understand from friends who are Chihuahua/mix parents that like with other breeds, there is controversy over the Merle term. If you Google this you will find many articles. This is one:

That said, small dogs are awesome but can have big needs. They need time to potty train, smaller meals, and usually small size food...if you do dry food which our vet supports for our Doxie.

That is great that you are established with a vet! Talk to him/her about any special needs your pup may have. I know in some Merle mixes there can be health challenges that can be managed with early intervention, awareness and planning.

Prayers that you and your pup have a lovely history together!

How cute! He appears to fit the description of "Merle" but to weigh 3 pounds at 9 weeks seems a little heavy for a pure Chihuahua pup.

  • He could be over weight as they can gain weight very fast during this growth period.
  • Did you happen to ask your vet what they thought about his breeding?

  • Did you see the parents when you picked him up?
  • These are the places to ask for information about your pup as it would be very difficult to tell at this young age because they change a lot over a period of a few weeks.
  • There is so much information about Chihuahuas (and Merle) on the Internet that it would take forever to weed through and pick out the best sites. However, this is probably the best way for you to learn about Chihuahuas so you will know what is considered "normal" and what may indicate problems.
  • Here is a site that has some information about the weight of Chihuahuas at different ages. To research normal weights you will need to know his approximate birth weight (ounces).
  • dogappy.com/chihuahua-puppy-growth-chart
  • Here is a good site for information on approximate feeding amounts and schedule.

  • My son has a small Chihuahua and she seems to get over weight in "a New York" minute so that is something you will probably have to watch closely.
  • Treats and food "scrapes" are usually the culprit so you may have to watch these very closely. Try not to let him learn to "beg" and it will be an easier job.
  • If you really want to know about his breed you can purchase a DNA test kit. These usually cost between $35-$200 and up according to how extensive you wish to go.
  • These kits are sold at most pet supply stores, big box stores, as well as online and also from your vet.
