I rescued a puppy and they said a breeder brought them 2 litters of Chihuahuas and that he was a full blooded Chihuahua. He looks just like a Chihuahua to me. I took him to my vet for a check-up today and he weighed 5.3 and is now almost 15 weeks.
I was wondering about how much more he will gain before he is full grown? I was hoping for an under 10 pound fog, but if he gets bigger I will still love him whether he is full blooded or not. Also why a breeder would not sell them? Could he be a mix? I love him no matter what the answer.

It is hard to tell without a picture. Your vet can run a DNA test to tell you the dogs breed. You can look at the paws to tell how big it will become. Your vet can estimate, too.
My chihuahua weighs 20 pounds if not more. Hes a little on the healthy side lol
Asking a vet or having a DNA test done are your best options for getting a definite answer to your question. I think your dog looks like a Chihuahua, especially the shape of its head. If it happens to be mixed with another breed, that breed might be a Dachshund. If so, your dog would be a Chiweenie. Check out the top left photo at
Thank you for responding. I really don't have to get a DNA test. He is just what I was looking for. I lost my chihuahua Chico a year ago & was ready for another. He is perfect for me. I was just curious.
He really looks like he could be. Some breeders can't sell a dog without papers and this could be the case with your dog. They will try and pass a dog off as full-blooded, but they can't produce the bloodline for the animals. Furthermore, they are trying very hard to get rid of backyard breeders who do this and that could be another reason your dog wasn't sold.
It almost sounds like these people were reported and in a hurry to get rid of the puppies before they had an issue. No matter what the reason is behind all this he is an adorable dog.
G-d bless you for rescuing this sweetie!! OMG! He is adorable and even though the pix is a bit blurry, he looks like if he isn't pure, he has a lot of Chihuahua in him. I am so glad you will love him no matter what!!
I am grateful that the people surrounded them to a safe place...no matter what the reason. Sadly, lately there is a terrible animal story almost daily in my area. It just kills me how horrible people are.
Their reasons could have been any number...from they didn't know breeding takes work to do it correctly and humanely or their dog had pups by mistake and they had no clue what to do or maybe they stole them from a puppy mill and felt guilty and turned them in. Anything is possible...but they did the right thing taking them to a rescue.
So glad you got him into a vet quickly! That was the best thing to do to get him off to a good start! Be sure to vaccine appropriately and carefully. Talk to your vet about the best food for the little guy The little 'uns sometimes have special food needs...like our doxie can only eat a certain small size of dry food and the vet has us avoid wet food to keep him healthy (he has unique needs--this is why the vet direction is so important).
Wishing you and the pup many happy years together!
Thank you so much for your help. I'm lucky to have found him.
You are happy with your puppy so why you were fortunate to find him makes no difference with the love between the two of you.
He looks like a chihuahua to me. He is the right size for his age. What a sweetheart. Enjoy him.
