The vet can give you the best guestimate by looking at his teeth,bones, etc.
I am not an expert, so this is based on my love of dogs and knowing many...I see some bully breed lines and some boxer features, especially around the back haunches!

he almost looks like he could have Boxer in him to me what with his powerful frame
also the photos is not terribly clear

I agree that your baby looks like a pit/boxer mix which may be a good breeding background.
- You do not say how old your dog is but I just hope he has all his shots/vaccinations as these are so important and need to be completed to keep him safe from all the bad things he can encounter.
- Just read some of the postings on ThrifyFun about how devastating Parvo can be - and so easy to contract - these germs can be anywhere so be sure he is up to date on everything.
- While you are at the vet, you can ask their opinion about the breeding and they may be able to give you a little more insight.
- Check out this site for taking care of shots, etc.

From the picture the dog is and looks like a pit bull. Now if it is a pure breed or not that one is a different story. Nobody can actually tell you one way or the other from a photo.
If the dog didn't come with papers there isn't a lot you can do except have a DNA test to confirm one way or the other.
Is this dog a Pit Bull or a Pit Bull mix?
