I just bought a Janome HD 3000 and the pressure foot lever literally fell off when I changed the pressure foot. What happened? Can I fix this myself?

Scary when that happens, isn't it?! You're sure you've murdered your machine - but you haven't:)
Your instruction manual has the info you need to get your machine back on track if you haven't already - look in Section 2 on page 12 to see how to remove (which you've already done, accidentally:) and then replace the 'presser foot holder'. It's a VERY easy job once you know where the instruction page is:)
Your machine has a 'snap-on' presser foot system - you don't need to unscrew that little screw on the holder to change out feet UNLESS you're installing a walking foot or some other extreme function foot.
Here's a link to the Janome support pages where a free download of your instruction manual is available in case you've misplaced yours. It's a slow download but worth the trouble - even if you have the hard copy of the one that came with your new machine, a pdf is always a great thing to have tucked up in your computer. I usually start all my Sewing 101 students off with a download for their machine before we do anything else including learn how to thread a hand sewing needle:)
