The flywheel turns freely when the spark plug is removed. With the plug installed, the starter cannot turn flywheel.

Maybe a problem with your crank shaft. You could do a compression test(see if you can turn the fly wheel by hand) if not turning , it could be crank shaft, fly wheel. Not good news!
Have you check the solenoid to make sure it is good and does not need replacing? There seems to be a short in the system when you install the spark plug because the fly wheel no longer turns when it is installed.
You do not say if it has been running recently or if it has been sitting - waiting?
This will probably make a difference in what you need to check first.
Have you checked your gas filter and fuse this season?
A good clean filter is an absolute necessity.
Battery is fairly new (they don't really last very long)? Checked to make sure cables are clean and tight?
Spark plug is new?
As I said there are numerous things to check as starting is the basic function before anything else can be checked.
You may be able to ask your question from some 'experts' on John Deere forums as they can tell exactly which steps to take first but they may want to know answers to the questions I asked before. Try them out so you can go back if you have different problems in the future.
