Keeping Bats Out of My House?

We have recently noticed bat droppings on our porch. Does any one have an idea how to discourage bats from hanging around our seating area? We suspect they are in the rafters of the porch.

Don't get rid of them, they eat insects, as mentioned before.
You can encourage them to 'roost' somewhere else though. Try an outdoor store or a store specializing in birds and feed/houses... they actually make 'houses' for bats, that will encourage them to sleep somewhere else instead of over "your" territory :)
You could also try buying that plastic spike stripping, that discourages birds from sitting on roofs, rafters, flag poles etc... My guess would be to attach it on the opposite side of the rafter so the bats have nothing to hang onto.
here is a link to Birds Unlimited, a bird store that sells bat houses - www.shopwbu.com/.../567.0.25796.0.0.0.0 you can order online... or just look at it and maybe have a handy craftsmen try to build one... since its not exactly inexpensive :(
and a link for that spike stripping that birds absolutely loathe - from ace hardware (maybe you have them where you live?) - www.acehardware.com/.../index.jsp?productId=2406863

How do I keep Bats out of the house, they seem to fly in from the patio door when the kids leave it open. What's the best way to keep them away from the house? My neighbor got a pool last year and it seems like since then there are Bats around. They are not coming in other places but it seems when it's a nice day and the kids are going in and out of the house, when I get up in the morning and turn on the lights, I have one flying in the house. Will having a cat help keep them out and what can I use to keep them away?

A cat will go after a bat for sure - Ive had that happen at my house lol! But also, if you look it up on google or martha stewarts website, there are bat houses you can install around your yard where youd prefer for them to be. I guess they are beneficiary as far as they do keep mosquitos down. Or you could Google bat pest control and see what you can find that way. Good Luck! (smiles) (05/11/2007)

You need a screen door! If an actual door is something you don't want to fool with and summer time is probably the worst since that is when kids are in and out all day then I suggest a tack on screen. I've seen them in many catalogs and you could take it down after summer! (05/11/2007)

DON'T call pest people to deal with your bats. They eat thousands of insects every day and are harmless. I have slept on my deck, off the bedroom, for years, leaving the door open. I could watch bats fly into my room at night. They nearly always flew back out, but occasionally would go into the house and get lost. I got a Mylar "curtain" at a party store - 1/4" strips of glossy ribbon - and hung it in the doorway.

The bats won't go through. The moon will glitter off the strips, and the tiniest breeze will set the whole curtain dancing. I enjoy that so much that I took the door off my closet and hung the Mylar curtains there, too. Haven't seen a bat inside since. (05/12/2007)

I have had great results keeping flying "things" out of the house by tacking up a beaded curtain over the openable part of the patio door - it keeps insects out of the house and would work for bats as well, I am sure. My dog used to walk right through any screen door, so I substituted the beaded curtain (kind of a 60's look depending on the deisgn of the beads). You can find these at any import store, or maybe even craft stores. (05/12/2007)

Keeping Bats Out of My House

Funny thing just happened....I was sitting here browsing this site when I went to the kitchen and on my way back something flew over my head. It was a bat! Then while chasing it around with my husband, we discovered another one was up near the cathedral ceiling in my living room and three more were hiding in the folds of a bamboo shade in an upstairs bedroom. Long story short....we just spent the last hour or so catching the bats with a fishing net and bath towels and freeing them outside. As far as I can tell there are no more, but I have no idea how they got in. Oh yea I woke up to one on my bedroom floor this morning - my one cat was sitting in front of it and meowing to let me know something wasn't right.

This morning I thought it was a freak one-time event. Anyway, this is the first time in my life I've seen bats inside any house. I happen to like bats actually, but I don't want them in my house. We will look for any possible ways they got in and seal up any holes etc to prevent it from happening again. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I have 3 cats and a dog, so I don't think that having a cat will offer much help. (They are helpful with mice though because they are on the floor or ground). Cats do grab a bat from time to time. Just hope it's not a sick one.

If you have bats in your home that is an issue for a professional that specializes in that field.
