When I get up in the morning there's always at least one cat on the counter, often two. I have to scrub the counter before I can start my day. Any suggestion on how to keep cat off the counters at night? During the day I just move them off the counter.

Grab your baking trays and lay them on the counter. Fill with a 1/4 inch of water. Place them in different places every night. If you have a lot of counter space and not enough baking trays, lay foil along the edge of the counters. When the cats jump up, they can't get a foothold.
I bought several of those spray chance and when they go buy it it activates and sprays out a Twist of air and scares them and they run away from it and that keeps them off of there I got those at chewy and they work
I don't know who posted it, but I agree with Deeli. Don't use mouse traps! Mouse traps are one of the cruelest things ever invented, right along with wild animal traps. The reasons they are cruel are too many to list.
My cat gets up on my counters too. That's just something you have to learn to live with if you have cats. I keep water bottles handy (filled with water, not any chemical or anything else) and squirt him when I catch him up there.
Other than that I keep anything tempting for him off the counters and put away in containers that the scent can't escape from.
In the mornings and before I prepare to use a counter, I simply wipe it down with a Lysol wipe. Takes only a few seconds and doesn't cost that much. If you don't want to but the Lysol wipes then use a rag wth dishwater on it.
But, cats like to jump up and explore anythng higher than they are on the floor so just accept that and move on. Anyone who would even consider using a mouse trap has no business having any pets.
If the mouse traps are used properly, the cats do not get caught in them. You place them upside down and lay a piece of cardboard over them so they just snap and the noise scares the cats away.
Spread mouse traps barely hanging over the edge of the counter. When the cat hits it it will scare the willies out of the cat. By having it over the edge it removes the chance of a cat getting a paw in there. Set it to it snaps away from the edge.
This may take a little effort but over time it will keep the cats off the counter.
Cats don't like it when their paws "stick" to a surface, even just a tacky surface irritates them. If you can figure out a way to make the surface of your counter "tacky" for about a week, that should discourage them enough to never try the counter top again. It may take 2 weeks just to be sure.
If I were going to do it I would get some two sided tape and strip it on the counter top over the edge. On the part sticking over the edge I would put a piece of cardboard. This is so when I go to remove the tape after a week or two I have something to grab on to so I can pull it up. The great part of the two sided tape is you can still use your counter top, things might stick to it but they will come up (except maybe your mail :( or tissues).
I was trying to think of something wide that maybe you could drape over the counter top and clamp down on the counter to keep it from moving but I couldn't think of anything... until just now. You could use that paper you buy to line drawers? it is wide enough you usually have to trim some of it off to make it the width of your drawer. Then you peel off the back so it has a sticky surface to set and stay in your drawer. You could use this paper but put it upside down on your counter top.
The trick would be to fasten it or clap it to the counter top so it would stay put when your kitties jump on it. You might be able to make it the same width of your counter (up to the edge) and then use some packaging tape to tape it onto the side edge of your counter top.
You get the idea... good luck.
Wow, you all have some great ideas! Thanks for the help!
Please do not use the mousetraps! I don't care if they are dangling along the edge because there is still a chance the cat's paw can be trapped in it if it is able to jump over the traps and into the inside portion of the counter and then turn around and step on to one. Not all cats need to hit the edge first to get up there. I had a cat once who could jump and land square center on the top of the refrigerator and those are much higher than a countertop!
Suntydt and aloham58 definitely have great safe ideas!
I balanced cookie sheets on the edge of the counter tops; took using 5 cookie sheets in my kitchen. My cat didn't even bother to attempt jumping up there last night, but this was my first night trying this. I'll leave them up there when I'm not cooking or using the kitchen.
