Keeping Cats Out of the Yard?

I'm really scared of cats. Someone told me to sprinkle cayenne pepper around to keep them out of my yard. Is this a good idea? I just wanna keep them away with no harm.

Cayenne is certainly not cat friendly, and I believe it hurts them. I think you might have just as good a luck with things that smell of citrus - like citronella candles (not lit, just set out - the cats can smell them), or lemon or orange peels. One can also buy cat repellant to sprinkle on lawns, etc., and I have found that that worked, although I thought the smell of that was a bit odd to me as well, as well as to the cat, and it had to be replaced after every rain.

I have my own cat, who doesn't like intruders, so I don't do any of this, but just shoo any other cats out of the yard for her when I see them. Another thing you could try when you are outside is a spray bottle. Give them a shot when they come close to you, and I assume they will give you a wide berth.

Louise is right. Dry some lemon peel and sprinkle it in your flower beds or the perimeter of your lawn. It makes a nice smell and it does keep them away. Good luck!

Another product that works (and can be a source of amusement) is a motion activated sprinkler. The cats and other vermin that can destroy gardens get blasted with a quick blast of water, and learn to stay away.

Another tactic that works is to break bamboo stakes into approximately 6 inch pieces, and drive halfway into the ground. Place these close together, and in a random pattern. The rough bamboo ends are uncomfortable on their feet, and they don't like it. They cannot kick up their feet without encountering another bamboo stick, so they will find another place to use as a litter box. The need for this would be GREATLY REDUCED if people would keep pet cats INSIDE their homes. They don't for the most part, so here are two tips. Good luck.

NO .. Cayenne Pepper does NOT hurt animals. It's merely a deterrence to keep the cats/dogs from using the bathroom in your yard and IT WORKS. Minimal cost, doesn't hurt animals and after a few days of putting it out, they don't come back.
