I use pins. I keep them an inch or so apart, and then take them up when I get close to the machine. It takes a bit of effort to do it this way, but in the end it's worth it.
Not sure exactly what you are asking. I use pins when I sew. I put the heads out and the points in and I pull them as I go so the pins don't go under my presser foot.
If you are asking about matching seams when sewing...I pin with several pins--same way as above and go slowly holding the pieces down and not pulling the pin until right as I get to the join.

When I was very young my grandmother would have me sit at the table and help her pin the seams together before she started to sew. She taught me that if you start at the edge and put the pin in toward the middle you can just sew across the pins and not break your needle.
The best way to hold a seam together sewing is with pins.
