First we hang our feeders far out on the branches away from the trunk of the tree, so that leaping from trunk to feeder won't work. Next we use fishing line to hang our feeders with. It's so fine that they fall off when they are trying to climb down from the branch to get to the feeder.

We went to Wild Birds Unlimited and bought an anti-squirrel bird feeder and they work.
It is around $40 but the little pests get on the feeder and the feeder closes due to their weight and they can't get the food. It is quite a show and some laughs watching them try to figure it out. They will hang there for a while but get no seeds and eventually leave. We have a WBU store where we live but you can go on line and get them as well.
We use the old fashioned toy called a slinky we put it on the shepards hook or pole and they can't get up, not to mentioned how amusing it is to watch. After awhile the give up.
