Tips for keeping trash from smelling in the kitchen. Post your ideas.
To keep the garbage from smelling in between trash days, I keep all food scraps in a plastic bag in the freezer. Before taking the trash out, just pull out the bag and slip it in the trash.

Theresa, thank you for posting this. I do the same thing - what cannot go down the disposal goes into the freezer in the warm months. I only use my trash oompactor for glass, cardboard, plastic, etc.
Although, in the winter months the bones, etc., can go directly out to the trash can :-)

I rinse out all bottles and cans before throwing into the wastebasket or recycle bins. I also rinse off bloody meat trays and the packaging materials around them before throwing into the wastebasket. These often are put in a plastic grocery bag and tied really tight and THEN dropped into the regular wastebasket. Anything that might get stinky gets rinsed or bagged! Even if I miss a day taking the trash outdoors there's never any telltale odor! (11/29/2004)

To keep trash from smelling: Rinse the plastic wrap on meat wrappers, absorbing material, and the container before throwing it in the trash. Rinsing smelly cans, like tuna and sardines also. It sure cuts down on having to empty the trash can when the plastic bag is not full!

Set trash can just out of the way on the back side of house. If you change a diaper, the couple extra steps to put that smelly item outside is so worth it! We always did that, we had no AC so the heat would work on trash like a flame on incense. That is VERY unpleasant !
Use SMALL bags for trash - even if it means you have to take out trash more often - instead of LARGE trash bags -
that way you are more clean because you have smaller amounts of garbage sitting around than if you use 12 gallon sacks! (12/30/2004)
If I put something really funky smelling in the trash can while cooking dinner, I spray (ALL) fabric refresher on top of the trash. This will certainly keep it "fresh" until the garbage can be taken out the next day. (12/31/2004)

I have a finicky cat who won't go in the litter box if it's dirty at all, and I don't want to let the scooped stuff pile up in my house. I used to just take out the trash a few times a week, but now I use a plastic grocery bag instead and take out the trash everytime I leave my apartment. Not only do I not have to store the trash, I also no longer have to buy garbage bags. (01/04/2005)

I got rid of my larger sized trash can and invested in a stainless steel small trash bin with lid that closes by pedal. I live alone and don't mind taking out my trash everyday. I line the outside trash can with large trash bags and keep my inside garbage in little bags. When the bag gets full, I close it. That way, come garbage day, you don't ahve to worry about dragging lots of little bags to the curb, only one large bag.
I also use flushable cat litter so I don't have stinky garbage can. I store all of my food in ziploc bags. When I dispose meat packages or smelly leftover food, I dump them in the used ziploc bag. It keeps the odors down once in the trash can and I don't have to worry about icky slime breaking out of a trash bag.

I spray my trash can with Lysol after each time I empty it. And then I sprinkle it with Baking soda. Any particularly nasty items (cat droppings, baby prizes, etc) are placed it double plastic bags and tied tightly. I use a smaller 30 gallon kitchen trash can so that I empty it more frequently giving it less of a chance to creep up and put the funk on me during dinner. Good luck and stay downwind. (02/18/2005)
To keep trash cans smelling fresh, use pieces of candle wax that's left after the wick's gone. Since I can't seem to get full use of my candles, at least my trash cans smell fresh by laying a piece of the candle in the bottom of the can before lining it with the trash bag.

At the "almost ready to throw away but not just yet time" I layer newspapers on top. It buys me a little time before I can dispose of it. This also depends on what type of garbage was in there. There are times when nothing will work. I also refrigerate or freeze my garbage, but only in the summer months.

Throw an empty Renuzit solid deodorizer into the can, before garbage goes in. There's always some of the product still stuck to the core, when it's all used up! (03/25/2005)
Well since recycling of glass and plastic hasn't hardly went over well in my area I use those containers with lids to for greases, and left over meal garbage. You can't smell what is contained.
Of course if you have a bit of land you might consider a compost pile for your garden.
Since we are on Garbage and Trash here, I would like to mention that I am a firm believer in leaving no boxes, tin cans or small plastic containers with air in them.
I tear up all my cartons and food boxes. Wash out and crush all my tin cans and small bottles,that are too many to be reused.
And the Jelly jars and butter container are filled up with garbage and our thrown away when full. I usually mix coffee and tea grounds in with the rest and if it gets too stinky,some pine sol.
As for Kitty litter or Doggy Dew, all I can say is to use those store plastic bags. That is what I used for my dog in my yard. I had a small lidded can on my porch where I would deposit the bags until I was ready to set the trash out . Those bags then fit into the single trash bag that contain the household trash and garbage lidded containers.
What did I get out of all that extra work and bother. Stronger hands, and the satisfaction of using less trash bags and the cutting down on landfill space. Now I do it without even thinking anymore. You can make a contest out of it.
If you do nothing else . Consider tearing up your trash into a compact form. You can do it every time a box, carton or mail is no longer useful.

We quit eating meat at home and started composting most kitchen scraps for use in our garden and now no trash smells. Making the trash smell better was not the point of either idea, but was an added benefit. Now, cat litter or stuff from doggie accidents goes straight outside to the trash can in a plastic grocery bag or other leftover plastic bag tied at the top (as suggested by someone else). The rest of the "trash" is rinsed and recycled, so there is little to go in our kitchen garbage can now! This cuts costs, because we use leftover bags from bread or potatoes or dogfood or other products instead of bought trash bags. This saves me space, because we use canvas or string bags for groceries so we rarely have many plastic "grocery" bags to store. My roses love the crushed (washed first) eggshells and banana peels and the garden plants grow much better in the rich soil than when I used packaged fertilizer! Back to the trash thing, my husband also washed and sun-dried the kitchen trash can and then we used baking soda sprinkled in the can for a while until we got our trash can smelling better. Cleaning recylables before disposal, spraying cans between bag changes, using empty bread bags to bag up perishables: food scraps, leftovers, diapers, cat litter, etc. If you smoke keeping a coffee can to dump ash trays in, are all ways to keep trash less "smelly" and reuses some things you would probably throw out anyway. When a Renuzit solid air freshener is used up, pull the remaining residue off the core, and drop in a wastebasket to keep contents from smelling bad!

I think feline pine is great for lining the trash can with, it eats the odors and the pine is pleasant. I use it in the smaller trash can where I keep all the food wastes. After doing the dishes I will add a scoop of pine. I have a larger trash can for other stuff. Sometimes spray them with fragrant bugspray to keep the smell and sugar ants out. I change the trash every four days.

I use plastic grocery store bags in a special can made for them. They are small so it forces us to take the bag out daily, which is good. Also I do not like the smell of Pine Sol, but if smell is a problem for you, you could mix some PineSol with water in a spray bottle and give it a squirt once or so a day. Its pretty strong and should do the trick. However, the best solution is to eliminate the problem and not just cover it up. (11/08/2008)
