Keeping a Dog with Parvo Hydrated?

We just found out today that our 15 month old pup has parvo. She is on her 3rd day, she has been drinking water, but was throwing up until this morning off and on. The throw up didn't start smelling bad until today. She went to the vet and got a shot of antibiotics and nausea meds and also has a week's worth of antibiotics. She is 160lbs, I'm wondering how much water she should be drinking. I got her some Pedialyte as well.

The doc said she should be feeling better by tomorrow. She is drinking on her own here and there. She is still is getting excited when we talk to her and the kids walk in the door. She usually drinks a lot of water. I just want to make sure she is getting the max amount of water she should for her size. My question is how much and how often should she be drinking?

I am sorry your pup and your family is having to deal with this terrible virus but it sounds like you took your little girl to the vet in time to save her.

  • I would recommend that you call your vet and ask them about the amount of liquid your puppy needs as they know your puppy's condition and should be able to give you the best correct answer.
  • From all that I have read - liquid should be given to a puppy every 15 minutes and this may have to be over a 24 hour period. This may mean someone in your family will have to stay with her through the night.
  • The amount can vary according to the weight of the dog but this info came from a vet:
  • This depends on how large the puppy is. Try to give at least 2-3 tablespoons every half hour or so, for a medium-sized breed. Give a little more or less than this, according to the size of the dog.
  • If they throw it up, don't worry, at least some will stay down. Wait a while and give them some more.

The main thing is she is drinking, she will increase her fluid intake on her own as she feels better.
