I like to use purses with an across the body strap while shopping, but sometimes it isn't convenient or I need to use a different purse. Then I just put my purse in the basket part of the cart and loop the child seatbelt through my purse's handle twice. The belt is harder to open, and if it does get opened by a snatcher, the double belt takes longer to undo.

I put my wallet which is small inside my upper pockets and leave my purse home. All someone needs is a razor to slice the straps off.
Having a purse, bag, wallet, etc., stolen is a real pain, financially, emotionally and a blow to one's security. Much better to keep your purse and other belongings under cover than to invite theft by displaying your purse, no matter how secure you believe it may be.
A recent new purse theft method is to quickly slice the purse bottom or side open with a box cutter, etc., and snatch the contents.
I shop at a grocery store where there had been 3 different episodes of purse snatching. I decided to take revenge. I bought a cheap purse at the thrift store, filled it with junk mail and other junk. I thought of putting some dog poop in a plastic bag, but did not. I carried the purse dangling from my shoulder and left it unattended in the grocery cart hoping the snatcher(s) would take it.
I thought I was the only person that did this. I work at a group home. When the client and I shopping we all ways do this
I do this, too (use the child safety belt) through the loops of my purse. My purse has thick leather straps, so it would take a thief a while to cut through them, but if he tries to grab the purse, he's going to get the whole cart going with him.
