My daughter bought me a Kenmore 1703. It is a nice machine, the bobbin winder works, but I can't get the needle to go up and down with the foot pedal. The belts turn, but there is no machine action. I can raise and lower needle by hand turning the wheel. How can I fix this problem?

You have an issue with the wiring either in the foot pedal or going into the pedal. If you can't fix it yourself, you will need to take it in for servicing.
Sometimes this is an easy fix but you may need to have a service technician to check it out.
Sears Service Centers are usually very good with these machines and will many times check it out for free and if you need parts they will have them available.
Google Sears Service Center with your zip code to see if a center is near you.
there are some YouTube videos with information on this machine.
