I have a Kenmore sewing machine and the foot pedal lost it's variable speed. It only has one speed now - slow. Can that be repaired, or could there be something else wrong? The sewing machine lights come on and there is power.

Either there is a loose or bad wire in the pedal itself or in the wire going to the pedal. Neither is a complicated fix
Check first to be sure there is not lint or a pin or gunk or Lego toy or paperclip stuck in the petal. Yep, it happens! I have had that happen.
Don't use canned air to clean, but when unplugged, carefully use a clean brush, a toothbrush works if you don't have the set that came with the machine and clean the hinges and all exposed areas.
I just saw that kennmore service for machine is no more, but I haven't called to verify that. You may want to try to find a local repair shop in your area if cleaning the petal doesn't resolve your issue.
If you have a big box fabric store around, they may have machine clinics or recommend reputable repair folks. Good luck!
Hello !
Safety first ! and Your safety first ! Before cleaning or trying anything with the pedal the first thing to do is to have the wires and the connection of the wires of the pedal tested. To do this you need a very basic instrument called multimeter (aka multitester or VOM). It is very cheap and many people have one, so ask your friends and neighbours, it will take just one minute for an electricist or anyone who knows a little bit about electricity to tell if the problem comes from a wire or a connection of the wires of the pedal. It happens that the wire of the pedal get caught and damaged by the metal parts of the pedal that folds when you press it. So be careful and check this first. Once this is out of the way, check if when you press the pedal the machine doesn't sew faster but the noise of the engine increases and after a while the engine is overheating, it would mean that the engine is responding to the movement of the pedal and working at full speed but its power is not transmitted well because something is slowing down the movement of a mechanic part of the machine.
