I need to paint my kitchen walls, but I'm just not sure what color. I have mid to dark brown cabinets and brown/tan counter tops and backsplash. Any suggestions?

You don't mention the floor color, but all else you mentioned are brown and dark. I'd certainly consider a lighter color for the walls. You also need to consider how much wall space you have. Between cabinets and back splash you may not have a lot of open wall space. The less space you have the more bright you might want to paint it - even white.
They recommend that kitchens be painted with a semi-gloss or glossy finish because it more durable and washes up well. (I no longer have children at home and I painted with with an egg shell finish.) As to color itself, it needs to coordinate with brown and that gives you beige, almond, light yellow, light green, etc. If you go with almond and similar brown based colors you should have some contrasting wall decor to brighten the "brown" kitchen.
