We have just adopted a 3 1/2 month old kitten from a rescue organization. It appears that he was taken from his mother before he was weaned. We are not alarmed with the suckling, but how he suckles. He grips the skin with his sharp little kitten teeth and hangs on while he pushes with his paws. What is the safest way to stop this?

The best way is to put them down when they do this. The kitten will learn quickly enough that this is inappropriate behavior.
Try a citrus scented hand cream or just rubbing a dab of lemon juice on the place being bit should discourage the behavior. If it persists, it may warrant a vet check as excessive suckling and biting can be an indication of an underlying health issue like a UTI or thyroid issue.
Sending up prayers that the citrus works.
The best way is when he does this to put your hand over his nose and on both sides of his mouth and push in gently to release the pressure. After you can scold the cat to have him stop.
You can also try to give the cat something to suckle on. I would find a stuffed animal of another cat like a dog toy and introduce this to the cat. Maybe the cat will take this in replace of the mom they lost.
