My partner has cancer and would like me to knit or crochet her a newsboy cap. I am not having any luck finding a pattern online. Any feedback would be appreciated.
She saw one in a special needs order catalog, but can't afford to buy it so I am trying to help her out by making one. She already has some yarn for one. She used to do needle projects, but has no energy to do so any longer.
Thank you in advance,
Grandma Glo
Prayers and best wishes to your partner :)
I found these instructions here:

Almost a Newsboy Cap
Starting at top, ch 2.
Row 1: 8 sc in 2nd chain from hook,** put a marker in work to mark beg of each round.
Row 2: *2 sc in each st (8 sts inc).
Row 3: *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (8 sts inc).
Row 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * around (8 sts inc).
Row 5: *1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around (8 sts inc).
Continue in this manner to increase 8 sts "every round", being sure that incs do not come directly over each other, having 1 st more between incs on each inc. round until there are 96 sts in a round, piece should measure approx 9 inches in diameter.
Band:
Row 1: *1 sc in each of next 3 sc, skip next sc, repeat from * around 72 sts.
Rows 2 - 4: work even in sc. Join with sl st to first st, but DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Visor: Row 1: 1 sc in next 14 sts, end off.
Row 2: with right side facing join yarn in fist st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of last 3 sts, end off.
Row 3: With right side facing you, join yarn in band 2 sts from beg of visor, 1 sc in each of these 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts of visor, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of last 4 sts of visor, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts in band, end off.
Continue to work 2 more sts of band and 2 more sts at centre of visor between incs "every row" until 8 row of visor have been complete. End off.
Facing: With wrong side of visor facing you, work to correspond to visor end off.
Finish: Cut a very stiff piece of cardboard (I recommend plastic canvas) in the shape of the visor. Insert between visor and facing, with right side facing you, join yarn at beg of visor at band and work 1 sc through both thicknesses of visor and around entire cap. Join with sl st. End off. The following is how they put the ridges in the cap: Starting at last row of cap, work 1 sl st over each row to top, repeat this sl st every 12th st around.

I thought you might be interested in a pattern I saw on the web for a newsboy hat, I think you could alter it. If you look on Berroco yarn websight, they sell a book #238 accessorize. It retails for 10.95. That is the closest I could find. After reading your post I searched and found the pattern, bought the book and started making a hat.

Try the book "Stitch N Bitch Nation", annoying name, but good patterns. There is a cable newsboy hat with a fairly simple pattern which is rather nice. Try looking for the book at your local library.
Hope this helps,

Here's a pattern for a knitted adult-sized cap. It fits more like a stocking cap with a brim than a beret/newsboy style (I've attached a link with photo), but it's really cute and might be a good fit.
Anyway, hope it works.

I have a small home based business where I make and sell chemo caps. If you send me your mailing address or email, I will send you a pattern for a newsboy hat.

Sorry my email address came out wrong Should be blksc AT telus.net
Editor's Note: We generally change email addresses so as not to be mined by spiders. Hopefully this will help reduce unwanted email. So all spaces should be removed and the @ should replace the "AT". (01/01/2009)

Here is a link to an etsy shop that sells patterns for a great newsboy style hat, although it is crocheted, not knitted.

I just made this yesterday. It's quick and easy, warm and so so cute. It is for sale, for $7, but she has a policy that she will give away one pattern per person if it is for the purpose of making a chemo-cap. Definitely check it out. (01/17/2009)
