I am knitting a basic sock pattern. The cuff, sock body, heel flap, and the heel shape have all been successfully completed ending with a completed row of knitted stitches. Therefore the yarn is on the right side of the heel flap. The next section is to make and shape the instep. This is where I find a problem.
The pattern reads:
Put the instep stitches onto one needle. 1st needle: with right side of work facing, using another needle and being careful to pick up the front loop of each pick up loops along the left hand side of heel flap. Using the needle with the heel sts. and knitting these loops as sts. K5 K2tog. K6 K2tog. K5. 2nd needle: knit. 3rd needle: Pick up and knit along picked up sts. on right edge of heel flap. K5 K2tog. K6 K2tog. K5. Knit 9 sts. from first needle.
This is the section I'm baffled with. None of it makes sense to me.
I have two needles with sts. on them. The sock body (leg) has had all those stitches put onto one needle (instep sts). The heel stitches are on the second needle. I don't understand how to proceed to pick up the left heel flap stitches if my yarn lead is on the right hand side. The instructions instruct that there should be stitches on three needles, but at this point I only have stitches on two needles.
I hope there is some simple explanation for my errors. Any help would be welcome.

You made the cuff, then you make the heel. Next is the instep. This is a side triangular piece needed on either side of the garment. The base of the triangle is attached to the heel flap
