Now that so many schools are closing we are all scrambling to figure out how we are going to help our kids keep engaged in their learning while they are stuck at home. Here are some of the resources I found that I think will help.
Khan Academy is a free online learning platform. You can sign up as a parent and are able to set up accounts for each of you kids. The parent account allows you to track your kids progress.
My children's school also uses iReady and they are able to login to that from home as well. At their old school they used IXL, which is not free to sign up but they do have family accounts for as low as $15 a month. What is nice about IXL is it has more subjects including science, social studies and even Spanish. I might choose to pay for an online learning platform like IXL if the free options don't pan out.
As well as the curriculum sites mentioned above you can find lots of educational sites on lots of different topics. Whatever subject your child is interested it, you can find great online resources on those topics aimed at kids. NASA even has a kids site! Here are some sites that I liked on the following topics.
NASA Kids Club and Spaceplace for older kids.
Mystery Science is something my second graders teacher uses in the classroom. It is free to signup! They have great short videos on many science subjects and have recommended experiments you can do with each lesson.
Hour of Code is one of my second grader's favorites, especially the coding game that you can program cartoon animals dancing to popular music!
Code.org offers computer science courses for free.
This is an online math course that was recommended by our school district: How to Learn Math Course
Libby is a great app that allows you to get e-books from your library on you phone or tablet. My kids especially like to get audiobooks from our library.
Kids books read out-loud: Storyline
Read National Geographic kids magazine online for free: National Geographic Young Explorer
In addition, here is a list that Amazing Educational Resources has come up with including all the websites they have found that are offering free subscriptions during this COVID-19 pandemic.
