Does lemon juice really cure acne scars?
Ashley from Dallas, TX
It is the acidity in lemon juice that helps the skin tone in some people. It will exfoliate the outer layers and cause new skin to move toward the surface. Unfortunately, it won't do much for scars, it can cause reactions in some individuals (especially when exposed to sunlight), and may cause uneven skin tone in dark skinned individuals.

I had severe scars on my legs from fire, when I was young. I should have had skin grafts, but the doctors held off because I was so young. I used vitamin A cream on them when I was young, now they are nearly impossible to find. That could be because I was so young, but I find that it helps on other small cuts, etc. Daily use of a good vitamin A cream could help you. (08/02/2007)

I have been actively interested in health food and remedies for over thirty years and I will share something that I have heard for a long time.
For facial scarring of any kind, apply a honey mask two times a day.
Supposedly, this will make the face baby smooth and get rid of scarring.
What I have read about honey might make sense. Honey has powerful antibiotic qualities. It was long used on topical wounds and cuts before traditional antibiotic creams, etc.
Maybe it will work for you, too.
Also, I have heard that the horrendously expensive dermabrasion is not really a 100% fix for deep acne scars. Plus, I believe that dermabrasion is used most successfully on fair skinned people only.
You might want to try the honey, it can't get any cheaper than that! I don't know how long it will take though, but you can't really lose. (08/27/2007)

I read somewhere that lemon juice does not get rid of the scars, but if you use it on an existing blemish it may get rid of some redness. (01/29/2008)

There are lots of wives tails out there and it's a perfectly normal thing to ask. Bio oil is great and takes months to work, but it is cheap. It promotes skin redevelopment and encourages continual healing of the skin in places it has stopped rejuvenating and healing.
Remember to never wash your face until it feels so clean, as this strips your natural oils that protect the skin and no amount of chemicals can replace your own proper ph balance. Foaming cleansers and scrubs that are found in supermarkets may feel like they have done something, but long term they cause your skin to sag, be more susceptible to scarring and microscopically bruise your skin. Go to a cosmetic surgeon as they have non surgical creams etc. that work miracles. Trust me. I'm a dermatologist. (06/19/2008)

The best and safest way to remove scars is the natural way. I had a lot of dark spots on my face and acne scars and I used a lot of creams, but none of them worked for me. We have different types of skin, what I used might help you or might not, but giving it a try will not kill you. But if I have scars on my face again, and if I have to choose from what I've used before, honey is on the top of my list and lemon juice.
First, apply a honey mask then after 20 to 30 minutes wash your face then apply lemon juice and wash it when you wake up in the morning. Do this for a month or less you'll see a big difference. It's the safest, cheapest, yet effective way to remove scars. And one more tip, do the apple fast every once in a while. Try eating just 5 or more apples once or twice a week (just apples in a day) and lots of water to cleanse your system and dispose toxic on your body.

I have used lemons off and on for a few years just to help get rid of old acne marks/brown spots on my face. The acid in the lemon is what makes this work. I have had professional dermabrasion done several times, and although the lemon does not give you quite the same result, you will notice cleaner glowing skin. It is more like getting a low grade chemical peel than a dermabrasion, same idea applies.
This will not get rid of scarring, but it will help slough off dead and old skin to reveal newer brighter skin, thus if you have scars that are slightly discolored this can help the scar to be less visible over time. It is the color that is changing, not the actual removal of the scar.
I have found that, as many others have mentioned, rubbing a piece of lemon on your face is the easiest way to go. I also like to do this homemade mask that I made up a few years ago:
Place everything into a food processor and add a little bit of water at a time till you get a thick, but spreadable paste. I put this on for about 15 minutes once a week and it keeps my skin glowing and it's cheap! (09/04/2008)

I heard that one tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of sugar and one whole lemon will work. Mix it all together and apply to your face. Keep it on for half an hour and wash with warm water. Pat dry. Do not pick your acne. It will only get worse like that. Good luck to everyone. This definitely works. It helped me. (02/10/2009)

Mild acne scars can be treated effectively with natural acne scar treatment. Try the following tips to get rid of acne scars the natural way.

I have been trying to get rid of my acne scars for months, and by the grace of lemon juice, I'm cured! I'm so excited about this, I could scream it from the mountaintops. I've even noticed that my skin has a dewy glow now that I haven't seen since my pre-pubescent days, and it's so soft.
I soak some lemon juice up with a cotton ball and rub it all over my face every night before bed. I wait 10 minutes, and then rinse it off. It's even stopped me drastically from having new breakouts. It took a week for me to start seeing the results and after a month, my skin was better than ever. I don't even back up like a cowardly dog when people stand close to me anymore. I like lemons. I like lemons a lot. (02/20/2009)

I had used lemon juice from 2000 to 2006. It worked really well against breakouts and dark spots, as well as scars. It's not just lemon juice. You have to drink lots of water. Taking multivitamin supplements might compliment lemon usage. I can't say it worked for pits as I did not have pits at that time.
Unfortunately, in July 2008, I had a major acne breakout due to hormonal change or maybe stress. Lemons did not work for me anymore, nor do any of my previous all-natural aloe vera masks which were perfect solutions before. This points out when hormone balance changes, skin changes, too. So the facial care regime needs to change as well.
For serious acne, I recommend visiting a dermatologist. Or if you could get an antibiotic solution such as erythromycin, and combine it with adapalene 0.1%. It clears the acne much more effectively than over the counter products. My dermatologist prescribed it to me, and now my acne is gone. However, my stubborn picking (absolute no-no) has left a micropits on my left and right cheeks.
So what now? My solution is applying vitamin A/ Retinol cream into the pit to stimulate hyaluronic acid + collagen production. (I am just lucky to be in Thailand where it is easy for me to get vitamin A from the pharmacy for under $10)
True, lemon juice cannot replace the missing skin there. However, I am using lemon juice again to restore the glow and eliminate dead skin from the pit. I'm giving my skin 4 weeks to react to the vitamin A. Buzz me if you'd like to know the results.
If all fails, have a cooling lemon juice this summer!
