I need help choosing the right color. I love red and my kitchen is a deep barn red. It is open to my living room that has light tan walls. The furniture is dark chocolate brown leather and the tables are a deep mahogany. Accents in the room are red and brown. Currently I have deep red curtains on top of white blinds. It is too dark. Any ideas?

I'd look for a pattern that has a light, neutral background (similar to your wall color in that room) and a design in either red or dark brown. Something like a damask, perhaps. You'd still have color but not an overall, heavy color.
I'd probably do cream colored drapes with matching cream sheers behind them. On the drapes maybe a wide band of red, matching the red in the rest of the room, across the bottom.
Then I'd sew (or buy) some cream colored throw pillows to tie it all together.
Both really good ideas. I love lace, too. It's airy and gives the darker colors a "light" touch.
Only you can tell if it is too dark, as the amount of light in the room makes a tremendous difference. But I like the idea of going with a drape that matches the wall colour, as I think that always makes a room look more spacious.
I absolutely love red and white gingham checks... the 1/2 inch size checks. Just a valance would make your kitchen cozy and friendly.
