My girlfriend and I are moving in to our first apartment together and we are allowed to paint the walls. We have a red couch and a blue recliner. These obviously will change later on but we need something that will go with what we have right now and in the future.

I think I would go with either a pale, powder blue or ivory.
I would go with off-white (but not a greyed white - those can be depressing), grey, or ivory. With that as a neutral background, you can use the black curtains. If your budget stretches that far, you might consider a slipcover or large throw for the couch, as it makes a very powerful statement.
