For the past two or three weeks I've been noticing a smell that I can only describe as when sweaty feet meet rain water. At first I only started smelling it when I would sit on the sofa in the living room. Yesterday I began smelling it when I first walked through the front door. I've tried to locate the source, but I can't seem to find where it is coming from so I can get rid of it.
My husband can't smell it, but sometimes it bothers me so badly that I have to start breathing through my mouth and I'm sick of feeling crazy. I live in an apartment so it's not like I can just tear up the carpet either and if I'm the only one that can smell it I don't really feel like embarrassing myself more by making others try to smell it.
Not long ago we also had a neighbor move in below us that has been smoking weed, but I don't have any experience with it to know if it can cause a weird musty smell up through the vents. The building was built in the 80s so I'm not sure what kind of things could be wrong. Still we've lived here for a year now and I never smelled anything until very recently. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to locate this smell or why I keep smelling it?

It is possible your AC unit needs a thorough cleaning as condensation build up of moisture can leak giving off musty odor.
Also, your floor vents may need to be cleaned. Speak to the building's owner/maintenance mgr.
I'd tell the property owner straight away. You don't want there to be a mold problem in the near future. That will cause more problems than just smelling bad :/
Check under all sinks and toilets to make sure there are no leaks. Musty smells come from moisture
It could be you are getting second hand smoke from your neighbor since it sounds like it started when the neighbors moved in. Do any of your other neighbors smell it? Do they smell it the same time you do? Are the neighbors home when the smell hsppens?
For short term fix, try a box fan in a window so it pulls air out of your apartment when you smell it and see if that works to clear the air.
Meanwhile have your landlord check for other issues like sewer gas, damp places and such. If it is the neighbors, you will have to decide next steps. That's a tricky situation.
Wishing you a quick fix!!
Don't let the fact that your husband cannot smell this odor bother you as that kind of thing happens all the time.
You should discuss this with your landlord if possible but I would check on where your AC is drawing air as that is most likely the source and it could be from an outside source or it could be from a central area that all AC units in the building draw from.
You may have to ask your landlord about having the duct-work cleaned if no other odor causing source is found.
If you have AC window units then you need to be sure these are checked because if they are old they could be the source.
