Locating Source of Smell in House?

We woke up this morning to a horrid smell. It smelled like onions and garlic. It was so strong, it felt like my throat was on fire. It was only in the back half of our house, basement, 1st floor, and 2nd floor bedroom. We have 2 heating/air units. Any idea of what this could be? The smell started to go away once we opened some windows. The smell was not there last night. Animal?

You could have a sewage leak or a leak from seldom used plumbing fixtures. Run the water to clear out the pipes.

Locating foul smell in house:

Step 1
Step outside for a minute to reset your sense of smell. Go back in the house and try to follow the strongest point of smell. Also ask other people to do this as a second, third opinion.

Step 2
Check to make sure your roof isn't plugged up by debris/leaves or a dead animal hasn't plugged up your vent.

Step 3
Get rid of all trash or old food located in the house. Rotten fruit and meat smells travel quickly.

Step 4
You may need a plumber to check for a cracked pipe that is causing water damage inside your walls.

Acrylonitrile (C3H3N) is a flammable and possibly carcinogenic liquid capable of damaging several organs of the human body. It's used to make acrylic yarns as well as composite materials found in aircraft.

Burning it will produce hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxides, both of which are toxic in their own right. Acrylonitrile has a strong and unpleasant smell reminiscent of onion or garlic.

If you have natural gas I would have the furnace checked.
If it only happened once it could of been a skunk.

The only time I encountered such a smell was from a mouse that had died behind the kitchen stove. The smell would come and go, stronger at times. Perhaps a mouse has died somewhere in the wall or around a heater. Do you have a dog?

Or you may borrow a friends dog to sniff out where the smell is coming from. I hope you find it. If it is a mouse, eventually it will dry out and stop smelling, but it may take a while. Best of luck.

It has only smelled that strong that morning. When we came home later in the day after the doors/windows were closed, it smelled more like stink bug. It's definitely in the vents now. It is not nearly as strong & the smell has changed. I'm thinking it was either a skunk or something died.

Locating the source of a foul smell in part of a home can be a difficult job as there are numerous things that could cause an odor like this.

  • Hopefully you have located and eliminated the cause of the odor but if not, maybe you could try some new suggestions.
  • Since you said the odor was all on one side of your house, (basement, 1st floor, & 2nd floor) and that you have 2 AC/heating units it would seem the odor may have something to do with one AC unit.
  • Something (animal) could have gotten the duct work of that unit and apparently died - maybe trying to find a way out.
  • You should check the air ducts for that unit and see if that is what has happened.
  • Hopefully that is your problem and someone can locate and remove the dead animal.
