Locating the Source of a Bad Smell Inside?

Recently we started smelling an odor that resembles skunk. I would walk outside and it seems to trigger the smell. I've aired out my house for about three days now. I wake up to it and puke in the morning because it's so pungent. I can't stand it anymore, it's getting worse and now I can smell it coming out of my kitchen sink. It seems to be spreading. Please what do I do to fix this problem?

Getting smells out of drains.

Step 1
Put one cup of baking soda with 1 cup of vinegar in the drain allow to bubble 10 minutes.

Step 2
Follow that up with a boiling hot kettle of water.

Step 3
Place lemon rinds in ones with a garbage disposal.

Step 4
Run the tap for about 5 minutes to dislodge anything that is stuck.

Step 5
Inspect the trap beneath the drain for debris if odor is still a problem.

Step 6
Turn off the water and place a bucket beneath the U-shaped pipe beneath the sink.

Step 7
Loosen the retaining nuts holding the pipe in place and remove it from the drain.

Step 8
Clean out any debris in the pipe and replace it before using the sink again.

It sounds to me like you should get a professional exterminator to check it out.

My daughter had the same problem in her house. You mentioned it smelled like skunk. Well, it actually turned out to be just that. A dead skunk in between the paneling and the insulation of the kitchen wall. She had to get an exterminator to open a hole in the wall and remove the skunk.

Good luck on finding your problem.

It certainly sounds like you have a dead animal in your wall, ceiling or under your floor as this is the absolute worse smell imaginable and can last for several days to weeks - according to the size of the dead animal.

  • Sadly, it is difficult to always find where the dead animal is located because the smell gets strong over a large area.
  • Professional exterminators have experience and can many times find the "spot" but lots of times it is still "trial and error" with them as well.
  • They may have to make several holes in the walls or floor before the animal is located.
  • If you decide to wait it out be prepared for it to be bad for quite a while because even after the animal decomposes the smell will linger in your home for a while also.
  • Here are a couple of sites that have information on what happens when an animal dies in your house (walls, ceiling or floors).

There are some products you can buy to help eliminate the odor.
These are sold at some hardware stores, feed stores, on-line (Amazon and others).
