I purchasd a Singer 603 sewing machine. It seems to be locked up. I plugged it in and pushed on the lever and it just humms. Is the motor shot ? Also even without it being plugged in, the the wheel will not turn. Thanks in advance for any help. And if anyone can recommend someone here in Mooresville Indiana to work on it I'd be much appreciative.

The problem could be as simple as your machine needs a complete cleaning and oiling. Take out the bobbin and inspect the holder for thread and lint build -up. Clean out all dust and lint using an artist paintbrush or even a pipe cleaner. Remove the throat plate and check under that also. Then oil the machine as per your owner manual. Also inspect the drive belt for both worn or cracked spots AND make sure there is no thread or lint build-up under the belt that will make it slip. Don't forget to check your hand wheel to make sure it's in the sewing mode and not in bobbin winding mode. Rethread the machine correctly with new thread, and replace the needle correctly.

Good luck and happy sewing !
First of all, your machine may need a good cleaning/lubrication. Here are some more steps to try to help w/ the problem you're having w/ your machine. Thread may be bunched up in the bobbin. Remove the bobbin and inspect it and clean out any dust/debris. Sometimes the bobbin case can be out of place and will not allow the hand wheel to turn. If you broke a needle and it fell into the shuttle area, it can also cause the hand wheel to jam up. Replace the needle w/ a good quality needle. Carefully try to turn the hand wheel in the the opposite direction.
Worse case scenario it could be a worn drive belt, a faulty drive motor. Most of the time it is build up of treads, lint, dirt ,and other particles from fabric that get trapped inside of your machine, causing it to fault and siege your machine ,making it nonfunctional .
Check the bobbin.
If the wheel does not turn, it may be in the bobbin-winding position. There is a wheel inside a wheel on the right side of the machine.
Ok
Thank you so much. Fingers crossed !
Unplug first.
Check if the handwheel clutch for bobbin winding is in the correct position. You can undo the clutch. If the handwheel is not free up, remove the right side panel and look for a jam around the handwheel, belt and pulleys.
Maybe the bobbin winding post is just moved to the bobbin winding position (I had the same problem). Just move it to the left.
Thread bunched up in the shuttle race often causes the sewing machine to lock up. Clean lint and debris out of the shuttle race, they can prevent the needle from hooking the thread, resulting in thread bunching up in the shuttle race and jamming the needle.
Have you picked a stitch? Always turn the wheel towards you, never away from you or else you will mess up the timing.
