Anyone have any advice for dieting? Anyone tried a particular diet that has worked for them? And does anyone have any books to recommend? I have started doing a little research and the number of diets, strategies, books, etc is pretty overwhelming.
Thanks, Beth
Beth, I have lost 50 pounds in 6 months with the following strategy.
I have learned that "diets" do not work. Lifestyle changes do. Stop eating white flour and sugar. Cut your portion size by 1/3 and drink water every chance you get. Start moving more. Get a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps daily. You can do this by taking one or two walks daily, walking in place while you talk on the phone or watch the news, for instance. You can do this. It has worked for me very well and it's a habit now. I don't even have to think about it. Good luck. (05/20/2004)

Something I recently read and want to start for myself is to start with your water intake and exercise first, worry about the food as you go, but don't kill yourself trying to be faithful to a diet. When you are mentally ready you can then crack down on harsher standards for yourself if you choose to do so. (05/20/2004)

I have found the weight watchers diet to be the easiest to follow. No special foods to buy, although I have started buying the reduced fat and /or sugar free items. I have lost 22# since March, and I feel great. (05/20/2004)

I've recently spoken with my doctor about dieting. She said to join Weight Watchers and exercise. I just started and you'd be surprised how much just keeping a journal of what you eat helps. I'm still trying to get motivated on the exercise part though. Good luck! (05/24/2004)

I've talked to a dietitian about what foods and how much to eat. If you can stick to changing your serving portions, that with exercise will do it. She also said with me living in the desert, I can't drink enough water. But said if I lived anywhere else and drank too much water, it could kill a person. Check with a health official where you live to see how much water you should consume daily when and while exercising. Better to be safe than sorry. Best of Luck towards your goals! (05/26/2004)

Hi. When my husband left in March I vowed to lose the baby weight I was still carrying. I weighed 170 pounds and was a size 14, it's now August and I weigh 109 pounds and am a size 0. I started easy by cutting out fast food and eating out. Then I switched from cokes to water. Coffee to green tea. I began walking first then built up to an exercise program and started a low-carb diet working gradually toward my ideal and here I am. I feel great, look great and have no complaints. Good luck (08/27/2004)
Well, I recently started to cut down on sugar and white flour. It has only been a week but I feel healthier. Another diet I tried was this:
Morning: 1/2 grapefruit or 1 cup of grapefruit juice, 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon
Lunch: 1/2 grapefruit or 1 cup grapefruit juice, choice of meat (no flour on it), veggies (could be salad)
Dinner: 1/2 grapefruit or 1 cup grapefruit juice, choice of meat, and salad or veggies
Late night: 1 cup skim milk or tomato juice
Do not eat potatoes or starchy vegetables, no sweets, caffeine will slow your weight loss. You will lose weight extremely fast. The first four days you won't lose weight, but on the fourth day you will lose four lbs. The problem is, like most low-carb diets, it is really hard to keep the weight off. You can eat as much as you want all day long as long as you only eat what you are allowed to. The more you eat the more you lose. The reason you lose weight is because you are eating nothing but fats and when you have two things colliding with each other they cancel each other out. Fat against fat equals no fat. Remember to only eat green veggies and no onions or fruit (01/08/2005)

I love Weight Watchers Points plan. I've lost 14 lbs in 1 1/2 months, doing great. Also get a treadmill, it's easy especially if you are just starting. I also love Women's Health Magazine. Good luck! Just saying you want to is a great start! (01/13/2008)
Try to eat organic foods. You may try organic supplements as well. Exercise and have enough sleep. You can try to visit www.drmercola.com to learn more. (02/03/2009)
