Your Pet's Breed
Beagle
How and when did you get your pet?
My husband and I adopted Louie from the Huntsville animal shelter, here in North Alabama.
We traveled to the shelter "just to look". Our stipulations were that if we got a dog, it had to be a female, preferably senior dog, and under 25 lbs. The reason being that we had two senior dogs at home around 70 lbs- one male and one female, as well as a male cat and male bearded dragon, so we felt we needed to add another female to the mix to even us out. Little did we know, last minute before deciding to leave, we ventured off to a section tucked in the back of the visitors area which held another row of dogs. There, we found Louie. An elderly, eager, very obese Beagle! We were told he had been there for only two days, and was turned in after his owner passed away. (Heartbreaking!) He was in incredible spirits for his situation.
What does your pet like to do for fun?
Louie loves to shred every toy he gets! However, that does not stop him from playing with the carcasses of the toys he has de-stuffed. He digs out the squeaker, which we then take away from him so he doesn't swallow it, and then he pulls them out of his toy box every once in a while. He also adores his squeaky rubber balls. He totes them everywhere he goes!
Do you have anything else to share about your pet?
Louie is certainly a Daddy's boy. We agree that his previous owner must have been a man, because I am second to none when it comes to my husband. That is his person. He also adores our nephew who is almost two years old. We worried that with Louie's age, he wouldn't tolerate a young child well, but now they are partners in crime!
Louie was seventy-five pounds when we adopted him! Have you ever seen a seventy-five lb Beagle?! He was unable to get in the back seat of our Dodge Charger, and unable to jump on the couch. He struggled to breathe a lot of the time and had us worried at first for his health. It was crazy to us, but we immediately put him on a diet and four months later he got down to a healthy weight! We haven't officially weighed him, but we suspect he is around 35 to 40 lbs. now. He has lots of loose skin, but he has the energy of a one year old puppy!
He is perfect in every way and we wouldn't change him for anything.

Beagles have beautiful eyes. Love those expressions. Our daughter had one and she was a real sweetie.
Your post brings back pleasant memories. Many years ago my boys had a beagle and he was the most lovable dog I have ever seen.
My mischievous boys would tie a string to a piece of baloney/ham and drag it around the house, hide it and then turn Fresno loose and they would literately roll in the floor laughing/watching him run around sniffing the floor hunting his treasure!
Of course, this was all done when I was not home (they probably did not know that mother's find out everything - well almost).
Love your story and nice to hear that people still adopt the "unadoptable". I believe that it is the usual thing for beagles to like men the most..
Thanks for sharing this loving story.
