Silver Post Medal for All Time! 390 Posts A great time saver! Better than the canned ones!
Total Time: 30 minutes
Yield: Depends on what size you make them
Source: HillbillyHousewife.com
Ingredients:
- 6 cups flour
- 3 Tbsp baking powder
- 1 Tbsp salt
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 cups buttermilk or sour milk
- Sour Milk
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
- 1 cup milk
Steps:
- To Make Sour Milk: Mix the ingredients and let stand for a couple of minutes.
- To Make Biscuits: In mixing bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add shortening, cut in with a fork or pastry cutter until it looks like little peas. Be careful not to overmix.
- Stir in buttermilk or sour milk until the dough is soft.
- Knead dough 10 to 12 times.
- On a floured surface roll the dough 1 inch thick.
- Cut into circles using a biscuit cutter. I use a glass because I haven't had a cutter in years! I found that the sippy cups for toddlers are great, they don't slip! Use whatever size you want.
- To Freeze: Place the biscuit dough on a large pan lined with waxed paper and freeze overnight. In the morning, put them in a large freezer bag and store in freezer until ready to cook.
- To Bake: Preheat oven to 450 degree. Take out as many biscuits as you want to bake and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
- Bake 10 minutes until golden brown.

Recipe calls for 2 cups buttermilk then when telling how to make the sour milk it says 1 cup milk with the lemon juice. Which is correct?
Editor's Note: You would double use 2 cups of sour milk in the recipe.
