As a self employed worker in a soft economy, I have learned to stretch every nickel to do a dime's job. One of my best strategies is to become acquainted with the department managers of my favorite grocery stores. These men and women have supplied me with valuable information regarding the foods in their departments.
For example; the bakery lady informed me one evening that I was just in time for "markdown". When I asked what that meant, she told me that every day at 7 pm that day's "sell by" baked goods are reduced 50-70 percent! I now often plan my trips to that store to coincide with "markdown" and will bring home artisan breads, pies, cakes, cookies, and more that I otherwise could not afford. Extras are tightly wrapped and popped into the freezer for later use.
The seafood manager has taught me a tremendous amount about fish varieties, recipes, and the difference between "frozen" and "fresh frozen on board", and which fish is the best buy for the day. He also alerts me when my favorites are due to go on sale. The produce, dairy, and deli managers are likewise helpful, knowledgeable, and have encouraged me to try new foods that are powerfully nutritious.
Overall, I have found these people to be my best allies when grocery shopping. They have saved me much more money than coupons and I am feeding my family with fewer dollars and more variety!
