When doing yard work or picking up litter, I use garden gloves from Lowe's or Home Depot. Being that I am right handed, I wear out a lot of the right hand gloves and accumulate many left hand gloves that are still perfectly good. To make a pair of gloves out of left hand gloves, I just turn one inside out and I have a right hand glove.
I have done this with rubber gloves several times, but this is the first year I have used a wrong side out garden glove. This summer, I found it to be very comfortable and much cooler than having the cotton on the inside.
It's yard work time! Let's also work together to get our roadsides cleaned up for the winter months. Get a pair of garden gloves. They are much better for picking up litter than rubber gloves. They protect your hands from sharp objects where rubber gloves don't and you will find that they are very comfortable.

I gave you a thumb's up for the glove idea, but also for picking up trash. Now if we can just get more people to pick it up than throw it out! Anne from NC
Thank you Anne.
I think the problem is, when litter is thrown out or blown out of trucks, unless removed, it just keeps building up. It takes years for most litter to decompose and some of it, such as plastic bottles, will never decompose. Even a cardboard box will lay there for over a year and not break down.
During the winter months, there's no grass to hide it and it is so visible. It's the easiest time of the year to pick up litter as the grass is short, there are no insects to bother you and the litter is so accessible.
I found out long time ago that once you get started, picking up litter is not as bad as it seems. It's great exercise that produces quick results.
When I first started picking up litter, I would stuff my pockets with grocery bags and walk the road. I worked for 1-2 hours at the time, bending over picking up trash and filling the bags. It was back breaking and it would take two weeks to get the soreness out of my back.
In the 90's, I received a reach extender as a gift from my daughter. After using it, I discovered that picking up litter is really easy and I could work for 2-3 hours at the time, come back home and get a lot of other stuff done. My back never bothered me again while picking up litter.
Dept. of Transportation was glad to furnish me with some large orange trash bags for keeping our area clean and they also pick the bags up and take them to the landfill. My husband and I now keep almost 3 miles of roadside clean.
Save your back. Get a reach extender. I like the light weight orange-u-tong from Arc Mate for $9.60. If you would like to order you can call 1-888-637-1926 or visit the web site. Home Depot also carries a heavy duty reach extender for about $20.00.
