Ripped denim short shorts and distressed artistically ripped denim jeans are all the fashion. This is the perfect chance to either get you or a teenager you know into DIY! Just look for the pictures on the net, then reproduce at home for a lot less.

You can use a cheese grater for even more distress. I used one and it worked great and also after you cut your hole, take the scissors and open them all the way and take the edge of the scissors and rub the edge of the hole and it will make them fray way faster. Lol and also youtube has great videos on how to distress jeans.
Instead of buying a new pair and doing the distressing yourself, just shop at your local secondhand store. You can find jeans there that are already soft and the wear is natural. You can add more distressing to these, if you want, too. You can probably pick up a pair of used jeans for just a couple dollars.

I agree with the thrift shop option, distressing them yourself is a lot of work but I would imagine that it would have the advantage of getting to choose which parts of the jeans are distressed.
That way you can keep it limited to parts of the jeans that don't naturally wear through so fast.
