Making Paper and Drinking Straw Rockets

Supplies:

• drinking straws
• lightweight paper
• PVA or other glue suitable for paper
• scissors

Steps:

1. Choose some thin lightweight paper such as gift wrapping paper and cut a long strip wide enough to wrap around the straw with an overlap.

 
2. Apply paper glue to one long edge.

 
3. Wrap the paper around the straw and stick the edge down.

4. Slide the paper off as soon as possible because you don't want it to accidentally stick to the straw.

 
5. When the glue has dried, cut the paper tube into short lengths of about 2.5 inches (6cm).

 
6. Take one paper tube and add a tiny drop of glue to one end.

 
7. Squeeze the end flat.

8. Repeat for all the paper tubes. Make as many as you like - the more the merrier! These little tubes are your rockets.

 
9. To fire a rocket place it on the end of the straw and blow the other end. If it doesn't fire, this might be because the rocket isn't sealed properly. If so, apply some extra glue to the seams. Sometimes it won't fire if you push it onto the straw too far and it wedges on. Place the rocket on the straw only lightly.
