Making a Felt Fruit Basket

Felt Fruit BasketMy mom and I created these felt fruits to go along with the Felt Veggie Garden that we made for my son. These are great to take along in the car or make a nice addition to a play kitchen. :)

Supplies:

  • felt
  • embroidery floss
  • sewing needle
  • scissors
  • tape
  • wooden basket
  • templates

Steps:

  1. Cut out the pieces for each fruit. Use embroidery floss to backstitch the pieces together.

    Plum: Cut out two (2) plum #1 pieces from brown felt. Sew them together. Then cut out two (2) plum #2 pieces from dark purple felt. Place the plum top between the #2 pieces. Sew around the outer edge and partially down the middle as shown.

    Grape: Cut out two (2) grape #1 pieces from brown felt. Sew them together. Then cut out two (2) grape #2 pieces from light purple felt. Place the grape top between the #2 pieces. Sew around the outer edge and the details as shown.

    Pear: Cut out two (2) pear #1 pieces from brown felt. Sew them together. Then cut out two (2) pear #2 pieces from light green felt. Place the pear top between the #2 pieces. Sew around the outer edge.

  3. Cut out the pieces for each fruit. Use embroidery floss to backstitch the pieces together.

    Peach: Cut out two (2) peach #2 pieces from pink felt. NOTE: For a two-tone peach, cut the template along the center line and use the left side pf the template piece to cut out a light orange felt piece.

    Sew the pink felt pieces together first, around the outer edge. Then attach the light orange piece. Cut out two (2) peach #1 pieces from green felt. Place one on either side of the peach and sew together.

    Apple: Cut out two (2) apple #1 pieces from red felt. Sew the #1 pieces together around the outer edge. Cut out two (2) apple #2 pieces from dark green felt. Then place a #2 piece on each side. Sew the #2 pieces in place.

    Orange: Cut out two (2) orange pieces from orange felt. Sew together around the outer edge. Add the details as shown.

  5. Cut out the pieces for each fruit. Use embroidery floss to backstitch the pieces together.

    Blueberries: Cut out two (2) blueberry pieces from dark blue felt. Sew together, as shown below to define each berry. Then cut out three (3) blueberry top pieces. Attach the tops to the blueberries with an "x" shaped stitch in the center.

    Banana: Cut out two (2) banana #1 pieces from white felt. Sew them together around the outer edge. Add the details as shown. Cut out two (2) banana #2 pieces from yellow felt. Put a #2 piece on either side of the banana. Sew together around the outer edge and add the details to the peel, as shown below. Optional sticker: Cut out one (1) banana #3 piece from white felt. Sew onto the peel.

    Kiwi: Cut out two (2) kiwi #1 pieces from brown felt. Cut out one (1) kiwi #2 piece from lime green felt. Cut out one (1) kiwi #3 piece from cream felt.

    Sew together as follows: Sew kiwi #3 to kiwi #2 around outer edge. Then sew kiwi #2 to one of the kiwi #1 pieces around the outer edge. Add the seeds with embroidery floss. Now sew the kiwi #1 pieces together around the bottom edge and then around the green piece, as shown below.

  7. Cut out the pieces for each fruit. Use embroidery floss to backstitch the pieces together.

    Blackberries: Cut out two (2) of each size blackberry from dark purple felt. Sew together around outer edge. Then add details, as shown below.

    Raspberries: Cut out four (4) raspberries from hot pink felt. Sew together around outer edge. Then add details, as shown below.

    Strawberries: Cut out four (4) strawberry #1 pieces from red felt. Cut out two (2) strawberry #2 pieces from light green felt and two (2) from dark green felt.

    Sew two #1 pieces together around the outer edge. Place a #2 piece on each side and sew together. Add the seeds using French knots. Repeat to create a second strawberry.
