Anyone know how to change a Christmas tree skirt into a ladies skirt? I need a fun skirt for an outdoor Christmas 5km run. I bought a red velour tree skirt trimmed with white fur to turn into a skirt. Do I cut the opening larger? or should I cut slits to create an opening wide enough for a waist? I thought it would be easy!

You will probably need to make the center opening bigger (unless you have a very tiny waist) to fit your waist and cut a slit up to the center. Sew velcro squares or add ribbon ties to the sides of the slit at the top to hold it on your body. You could try just doing the slit, try it on and see if it fits comfortably around your waist just that way.
You may need to buy another tree skirt unless you have a waist no bigger than a Christmas tree trunk:)
Split the two skirts along the seam up to the opening for the tree trunk.
Right sides together, stitch (or staple, or safety pin:) the two skirts together along the splits.
Turn the newly reformed (huge, lol, but hang on...) skirt right side out and slip it over your head.
Now, you can either hold it up 'paper-bag' style (with a rope or belt cinching the fabric to your waist, OR you can get fancy:
Take the skirt off, turn it inside out, put it back over your head. Form a casing by folding the edge over all the way around and pinning the fold so you can sew it - be careful to make a deep enough casing to be able to thread your rope or (here's the fancy part) a length of elastic cut the circumference of your waist plus two inches for stitching, and wearing comfort.
Take the skirt off, stitch almost all the way around your casing as close to the bottom edge as you can, leaving at least 1 1/2" open for threading the elastic through.
After you thread the elastic through, try it on for size, adjust the elastic as needed then stitch the ends of the elastic together where you've figured out it needs to be so the skirt won't fall off as you're moving.
Finally, tuck the elastic up inside the casing, then finish stitching the casing shut...
Voila, you have a cute skirt that won't fall down:)
