I have a 5 year old son who wants to be a mummy for Halloween and the only cotumes I've seen didn't look like a real mummy. Does anyone have any ideas how to make one? I love making his costumes, I'm just stuck on this one.
I did this one last year. I took a cheap white sweat suit and strips of white material. I sewed the strips on the sweat suit so it appeared that he was wrapped. You do have to be careful to not get it to tight so he can't get it on. I also used a skit mask and sewed the strips on there so his head was wrapped. (10/04/2005)

I made a basic body suit (like a store bought costume) out of muslin with streamers of extra muslin coming out of the seams. Then dunked the whole thing in a bucket of strong tea. Put on suit and then wrapped the streamers around the body and limbs. For the head I made a "bonnet" and did the same with the streamers. White make up and black eyes. Bag was a pouch with streamers hanging it from it. (10/04/2005)

I made a Mummy costume for my son. He hated to wear a mask so we used a little face paint (he didn't like that either.) But I made a mummy baseball cap. I use torn sheet pieces and glued it to the hat kind of handing down on parts. I used the torn sheets an glue them all over white sweats. (They only come in girls, but I didn't tell him that.) When my daughter was little she was a mummy and won first prize in her 1st grade class! Just have your child wear white sweats and white shoes. Go to the store and buy medical wrap... it's called Kling. Just wrap away! (10/04/2005)

I used an old white bed sheet cut into strips. As I recall, he (is now 41) worn light PJs underneath. I did the face part with a roll of bandage gauze. He won first place at the cub scout meeting. (10/06/2005)

If you blotch an old white or ivory colored sheet with wet tea bag coloring (or you can soak the whole thing in a tub and tear strips out of it) it will look very authentic. (10/07/2005)

Great ideas, the only thing I can contribute is to use white duct tape to secure some of the wrap (like on the cuffs), so it doesn't get in the way, unraveled, etc. (10/07/2005)
A neighbor dressed as a mummy by wrapping up in several rolls of toilet paper. You could probably buy a 4 pack at the dollar store. I think it came a little loose as the night wore on but it was cute and cheap! (10/07/2005)

I used seven rolls of double ply Charmain T.P. and a roll of scotch tape. I started by my ankles and worked up to my neck and then having my arms done and then my shoulders neck and head. It was awesome. I called it the "lazarus" from the bible.(note this costume doubles as a hospital patient in traction.) (10/29/2005)

I am doing my 1 year old son as a mummy this year. I bought several yards of off white napkin material, then I soaked it in black tea. I shredded the strips rather then cut them. Then I wrapped them around (on top of off white pants and shirt) and sewed them on to secure them. I also left some of the ends hanging off. Then I wanted it to be on his head also so I took a white plain baby bonnet and sewn strips to it as well. Then I am going to paint his face white with black circles under the eyes and black lips. I know it's cold here where I live, so I am always dyeing white gloves to match the costume. GOOD LUCK! (09/18/2006)

I made a muumy for son when he was younger. Because he had to put it on and take it off again for school parties, I had to keep it simple. I took an old white bed sheet and soaked in tea to give the material an aged look. Then I ripped it into strips so it looked a little tattered. I then took the strips and basted them loosely to a pair of his jogging pants and sweatshirt.

Here is the best thing to do! Run to Walmart and get a ton of white cloth.. They have specials there all the time (I bought 14 yards of it today for $8) then take it home and cut it into strips. Wear some old clothes and start wrapping.. Make sure you have a ton extra to wrap around so that you don't look cheap, like you ran short. You can also add in toilet paper as well. Use ACE bandages for your fingers. works really well and looks great! (10/27/2006)

Gor my 7 yrst old son I bought a cheap king size bedding sheet set (off white) and tore it in strips. I wrapped it around him leaving some loose. I took a pair of gloves and wrapped them in gauze, soaked in tea, took a face covered snow hat and covered in gauze. After that I soaked in it tea. This way he stayed warm also. You will need to get those pants off during the party, so I did the sheet/tea dye trick and basted them to a pair of long johns. For the head I cut out a head shape from the sheet/material, sewed it together with elastic at the bottom for a tight, but loose fit and put it over my head. I took extra material and wrapped it around my middle and neck. For my hands I sewed the material onto a pair of cheap gloves from the dollar store. Make sure it will be cool where you are going as it is a very warm costume. (10/11/2007)

I used a pair of cream colored long johns and bought some cream colored material at the fabric store. Washed the material, ripped it into strips and just tacked it on with small stitches loosely to the long johns. It is quite comfortable and easy! (10/13/2007)

I'm 17 and i am throwing a Halloween costume party. I am going to be a zombie mummy. The way I am making the costume is by using paper towels. I used all of my budget on food and decorations for the party so I tried to think of a cheap costume. So I bought a pack of paper towels and unrolled them and soaked them in coffee and tea (to get 2 different shades of grunge) then bought some "gross moss" and some "Halloween bugs" at the local discount store. after the paper towels soaked I crumpled them up in a place where they could air dry without getting moved. I'm just going to wrap myself in the paper towels and put the moss and bugs on too with hot glue. hot glue is perfect for any costume, it's easier then sowing as long as you know how to work a hot glue gun and don't burn your child.(10/14/2007)

My five year old grandson wants to be a mummy. too. I am going to buy a white sweat shirt and pants. I will use 2" strips of torn white sheet and wrap and hot glue the legs and then the top of the pants. Then I'll do the arms and body of the shirt leaving some straggling ends. You will have to decide about the head (how much or how little you and he are comfortable with). I'm going to do a little bit under the chin to the top of his head (loosely) and then around the top of his head. I won't put anything around his neck for obvious reasons. Would be great to find a white cap of some kind to put on his head because you could glue some strips to it. (10/15/2007)

I am making a mummy costume for my daughter this year. I bought a Whit Sweatshirt and Sweatpants (1 size larger, so she can were jeans or other sweat pants underneath and a jacket underneath for warmth, we live in CT). I will wrap these in ace bandages (bought from Ocean State Job Lot) and I will sew them with a few stitches to hold. I also bought a Ski mask and am going to wrap this as well and cut the eyes open, this will cover the head (10/22/2007)

Hey, I'm doing a mummy costume this year too. My plan, wear long johns and wrap the mummy material around it, sewing one knot on each level as you go up, working from bottom to top. I am using a cheap material I found at Wal-Mart that looks like bandages. You could also go for actual bandages but that could be costly. You could also use cheese cloth. Be sure to put makeup on his eyes, nose and lips to make him look like he's been mummified!

My daughter is going to be a mummy too. I used my son's old ghost costume and dyed it in tea. Then I got some cheese cloth and dyed it too. I wrapped the ghost costume in cheese cloth and put it over some pants. I am going to tightly wrap the head in some leftover cheese cloth and voila.

I spent about $12 on materials, plus glue sticks. I went to a resale shop and (this is for a size 6) purchased boys long johns (which I found new for $1.50 size 12-14) in beige. Since mummies are ragged, it doesn't matter how you cut the legs, the important thing is to be able to glue to the material without the child in it, which means once its glued on, there will be no expansion room. Don't think you are ever talented enough with a glue gun to try that. That was my primary concern that I wanted to address here. Buy pants big, cut off legs and glue without the child in it. I read that if you use hot glue, you should attach the mummy strips (old sheets, gauze, cheesecloth, whatever) to the sweatshirt/long underwear below with dots of hot glue, rather than long lines of glue. This way you retain some "give" in the fabric and it shouldn't be so stiff. (10/16/2008)
