Gold Post Medal for All Time! 677 Posts Even if you purchase everything new, this is not an expensive project. I found the laundry basket at the curb, got the potting soil and burlap on sale, and traded plants with a neighbor.
When the season is over, store this in the garage. The berries will go dormant and fruit next year. You may have to have to replace the top plants. I plan to winter sow the top plants next year.
Total Time: 30 to 45 minutes
Yield: 1 planter
Source: Garden group I belong to
Supplies:
- 1 laundry basket
- burlap to line the basket
- scissors
- potting soil
- plants for the top
- 1 Tbsp sugar
Steps:
- Punch holes in the bottom of the basket for drainage.
- Line the basket with the burlap.
- Fill with potting soil.
- Cut holes in the burlap and thread your plants through. Bury in the soil.
- Arrange plants on the front and sides. If you are placing against a wall or fence you don't need to do the back.
- Trim off the excess burlap.
- Add more potting soil if necessary. Plant your choice of flowers on top.
- Water in. My berry plants were a little wilted, so my neighbor suggested adding a tablespoon of sugar to my watering can to ease the shock of transplanting.

Thank you. I expect it will be even prettier as time goes by and the strawberries fruit!

Where do you get the burlap to line the baskets? I tried Lowes and Walmart. They dont have it.
