Market for Thimble Lots?

I will eventually post a photo, but I'd like to see if there's a market for a large thimble collection? I have about 400 thimbles in many shapes and sizes, porcelain, lead crystal, wood, and from famous china companies around the world.

I also have a small lot of thimble Christmas ornaments and other items related to thimbles. My question is I don't know where to start and is there a market for thimbles, and is Ebay the place to start? I may need to lookup some thimbles that I have to see if they're worth anything then decide to I sell them individually or in a lot.

Thank you.

Thimble collecting is so popular that collectors even have a special name - people who collect thimbles are known as digitabulists. Thimbles don't have a great value unless very old or limited edition. The average thimble will cost you around $5, but some of the very collectible can be up to $20. Modern collectors are mainly interested in thimbles from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Perhaps you have valuable thimbles in your collection and you should first try to identify your thimbles. Here are some websites that will help you identify:

Try selling your thimbles as several lots on eBay and/or any other site. Start at a higher price and lower it if no one shows an interest.

I actually have a thimble somewhere that says Im a digitabulist. I never knew that before.
I have about 4 large display boxes that are old or semi old printers boxes, and some still have legs on them. I'll have to price them too.

This is difficult to answer because you could have one or more of the more valuable thimbles and if you set up a group you may not know the true value of any of the thimbles included in that group.

Research is slow and tedious, but that is the only way to know the value of your thimbles. You can probably tell pretty quickly which thimble is in the 'low value' group, but there may be others that look nondescript but could be of higher value.

You mentioned, "I can also try an auction on there and place a minimum that has to be met or I wont sell them."
You may be talking about a 'reserve' auction on eBay and this type of auction does not always play well with buyers and many will just 'watch' and not bid or buy.
Sometimes it is best to just start an auction at your lowest price that you will accept and see how it goes.
I would suggest you also place your listings on several sites so you're not limited to one location.

Just be sure to remove the listing from all sites when one is sold.

You can check out eBay's sold listings to see what people are actually buying/paying, and also get ideas on how to list your groups. Always show lots of good pictures.

Check eBay's sold listings by going to the top and choosing 'highest price/shipping' (next to shipping) as this will show you the sets as well as the more valuable thimbles.
www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=thimble+collections...

This link shows what sellers are currently asking for their thimbles.
www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=thimble+collections...

Some listings will be listed for weeks, months, or years, so you may just have to decide on a starting price, offers considered and if the set does not sell in a few weeks, lower the price or change the listing.

Thanks so much. Many of my thimbles are cheap everyday ones and from when I or a friend traveled. But I have a bunch from a Thimble Collectors Club thats out of business but I lost the empty boxes and a lot of the cards that came with them in a move.

So I am sure the price of worth may go down, but thank you, Ill have to get my hands dirty and sift through them.

I would make smaller lots of mauve 10-20 each. Very few people will want 400, unless they are planning to resell.

If you have that many thimbles you may want to join a collector's club. There may be people searching for some of the thimbles you have. Here are some links for more information:

Ive seen large and small collections listed for sale on Ebay, but thats why I posted this question. I wasnt sure if there is a market for thimbles and how long those posts have been on Ebay without them being sold.
I can also try an auction on there and place a minimum that has to be met or I wont sell them.
