Microwave Start Button Does Not Work

I had a Sharp over the range microwave put in in 2005. Everything works, but the start button. The lights and fans work fine. I called for a tech; they charge $75 for just coming to the door. I am better off buying a new one, unless someone can tell me how to fix it. Any suggestions anyone? Thank you.

I once had a microwave like that and I found the door latch spring broken. The door latch, in most cases must close a switch and this tells the microwave that the door is closed.

As you know they will not work with the door open. A good handy man should be able to check and see if the latch springs are good. (01/20/2010)

Definitely don't bother paying for a repair person and definitely 'do not' pay extra for a warranty on a new microwave because that's just a way for the company to collect extra money for a service that might not be available/in business after four years anyway. (01/21/2010)

Can anyone help here! I have my microwave working properly every function is alright, it's just that start button does not work for a limited time (at morning) till 8300hrs. Then it works! It's a bit of dramatic problem. I guess there is something like child lock or anything got applied! Is it? IDK

Had the same problem with the start button not working, first thing I did was clean the inside real good, the seams inside the microwave, made sure nothing was keeping the door from shutting tightly and made sure the latches were working properly. After I did this it still would not work. After further inspection I seen a metal looking plate and it looked like it hasd something on it still after cleaning, I took baking soda put it on a scouring sponge and gently while inside the microwave cleaned it to where it didnt looked burnt.

plugged the microwave back in and it works great now, no issues. I guess in a microwave when food splatters on the sensor plate it will not work until clean, probably a safety precaution
