Middle School Dance Ideas

My husband and I are DJ's for 6th through 8th grade dances at our local school. We have noticed a trend that has prevailed forever. The dreaded "boys here and girls there" that seems to always be at every dance. Girls want to mingle, but are too afraid, boys don't want to mingle because they are afraid. We are trying to make our dances not so "scary".

We have been brainstorming ideas to get the two genders involved with each other at the dances, yet also be fun. For example: The Hokey Pokey in boy/girl teams where they stand side by side and the limbs in the middle cannot be used, or maybe the Limbo in pairs and if one partner falls. both are out.

We need ideas where there are clear winners, not subjective judging since the chaperones are parents. We don't want the kids saying "so and so cheated" or "he/she only won because so and so is their dad".

This is such a hard age where everything is "stupid" in the eyes of a lot of middle schoolers/junior high. Middle school/junior high kids are definitely welcome to reply to this because you guys and gals are our best feedback givers (no offense parents). Teachers and parents also help please! Let me know what has worked for y'all!

I think a good idea for a dance game is dance circle. The boys would form one circle and the girls would make another circle around the boys. The music would start and the students would start walking. When the music stops, whichever boy and girl are across from each other would dance one dance together. It is a great way to break the ice between students. Try it, it is very fun! (12/05/2006)

Middle School dances are really hard to make fun. The adults treat us like kids and we want a more "mature" dance like the Homecoming or Prom. Our school group was trying to arrange a formal dance for the 8th graders at the end of the year. We talked to the Principal about it and she said that it had to be "casual", right after school. They expect us to act like adults, yet they treat us like little kids. It's so stupid. I can't wait until next year, high school. (12/08/2006)

A fantastic dance "game" that is a great social mixer is called a "snowball" dance. Everyone forms 1 big circle and you choose a small number of girls or boys, or both (the number should be approx. 1/10 of your total group #.) I'll use an example of picking 4 people. Those 4 people go to the middle of the circle. When the music begins the 4 in the middle go to the outer circle to ask someone to dance. These 4 couples dance in the middle of the circle until an adult yells "Snowball" (give them about 45 secs of dancing before you do this) Then those 8 go to the outer circle to ask someone else to dance.

Give it another 45 secs or so and yell "Snowball" again. Keep on doing this until everyone is dancing. "Snowball" a couple of more times to let them mix a little, and then begin again, picking a different group to begin in the middle. We were having a middle school age dance party that looked like it would be the typical boys on one side and girls on the other until we started this game. The kids looooved it - didn't want to stop - and it really got them mixing!!! (02/13/2007)

I'm an 8th grader in Middle-School and the president of the Junior Student Council. We organized a dance last semester called the "Spring Fling." out of 60 middle-schoolers, 40 showed up. it was kinda cool. The decoration we put up were paper flowers and chains. (02/28/2007)

I went to this awesome dance last night and I think I might have a few Ideas for you. First you should have a really good DJ with up to date songs. Then you could have a strobe light for the kids to flash around it, is so fun! You should also have some mocktails like a pina-colada, or a margarita but No alcohol. Also, some good themes are: red carpet theme, marti gras beads or movie theme, masquerade, or a fear factor and have prizes to give away! Also, a really good song that everyone dances to the macarana! (03/23/2007)
