To save money on cereal for my kids, I mix plain Corn Flakes half 'n' half with Frosted Flakes in a large plastic container with a pour out top. This way both cereals go farther and the kids aren't eating too much sugar at one sitting.

I've been doing this for years except that I use plain bran flakes instead of corn flakes with frosted flakes. That way my boys get the fiber they need and the frosted flakes flavor that they love. Less calories, less sugar, plus more fiber. Everybody wins!

This is a good tip. I used to do it with my kids too -- although we only ever had frosted cereals when we went camping and bought the little single serving boxes. They had to choose a sweetened kind and a regular kind. Most cereals are sweet enough with out added sugar -- corn flakes, rice Krispies, cheerieos. When I was a kid, I always had sugar on my cereal, but now neither my kids nor I do. We find them sweet enough. My kids -- who are all adults now -- never thought to use sugar on anything except oatmeal because we never did. (01/14/2009)
